HISTORY OF MARIACHI

There are many theories about the origin of the word mariachi. The one most people know says that it comes from the French word mariage, meaning marriage, which through time changed into mariachi.
The best theory, accepted also by the mariachis themselves, is that the word originates in Cocula, a town in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
In the 16th century a tribe called Coca formed on a hill near Cocula. Its people were the ancestors of the Chimalhuaca and Nahua tribes and were skilled musicians and imitators of sounds they found interesting. It is to this tribe that Mexico owes the existence of the famous mariachis.
In the period of evangelization, the natives of Cocula began to praise the Virgin Mary, whom they called Maria del Río. As her image was once found during farming, the devotion of the Cocula residents became even greater and they wrote her a song of praise. According to the researchers the word mariachi originates in this song: In one of the passages of this hymn for the Virgin Mary the words “Maria ce son” were found, which mean “Mary’s song”. When “Maria ce son” is pronounced, it sounds like “Maria Shi” or “Maria She” and when you pronounce it quickly, it sounds like “Mariachi”. Research thus shows that the word mariachi originates in a hymn and not the French word mariage, as some other researchers affirm.

MARIACHI, A BIG SURPRISE AND A SPECIAL GRAND FINALE
Mariachi as a birthday present. The birthday surprise, a mariachi band, usually comes toward the end of a party (sooner is of course also possible), when the guests think this is just another nice and long party, which is slowly coming to an end... But then they suddenly hear trumpets and ... surprise!, in come six real Mexican mariachis in traditional charro outfits to sing to the host. A live mariachi for a special grand finale!
Mariachi at a wedding. The memories of this wonderful ceremony last forever, especially for the two people who are connecting their lives, may it be at a civil or church wedding. You can make these memories even more special by organizing a mariachi as a wedding present. Imagine the two entering to the music of the famous Mexican songs such as “Besame mucho” or “A mi manera”, just like in movies, only this time live. This way a mariachi can make the happy day even more special for our friends in love.
Mariachi at a fun bachelor party or bridal shower. A friend is getting married. The funniest and most original practical jokes are planned for his bachelor party, to give him the last taste of the single life. And if you dress him up as a mariachi so that he must sing live (with his grand voice) in his own neighborhood? Yeah! Just like Antonio Banderas in Desperado.
And what about a sexy serenade by six real Mexican machos flirting with your friend at a bridal shower?

THE REAL MARIACHI COMES FROM MEXICO!

Imagine a typical Mexican with dark skin and a thick moustache who is singing old Indian songs dressed in a national costume. Can a typical Mexican wear a Bavarian national costume? Do you believe that “O sole mio” sounds the same when sung by a Mexican or an Italian singer? How can you tell, if a mariachi is a real mariachi? Simple – he is from Mexico, from the well-known state of Jalisco with the capital Guadalajara, which is the cradle of the mariachi tradition, and that is why mariachi nature has been running through his veins for generations and that is what gives his singing a special style.
